Layer 2 switches - unmanaged
Layer 2 unmanaged switches are ideal for smaller industrial installations where simplicity and stability are key. They require minimal configuration and provide reliable connections between network devices via Fast Ethernet.
The switches' plug-and-play design and robust construction make them particularly suitable for panel mounting and decentralized installations where fast and maintenance-free operation is required.
Switches of this type are often compact, DIN-rail mountable and designed for industrial environments with high demands on temperature tolerance and electrical noise. They are particularly useful in control panels, machine control and smaller network segments where advanced networking features are not required.
Areas of application
Unmanaged switches are widely used in installations where they connect PLCs, HMIs and sensors in a simple and reliable network. They are also suitable for establishing separate network zones or secure connections to edge devices without the need for network setup.
However, as the network grows in complexity or requires features such as VLAN, monitoring or redundancy, Layer 2 managed or Layer 3 switches should be considered.
