Is the serial data you send secured?

IEC 62443-4-2

Introduction.

Companies large and small are hit by cyber attacks every day, trying to find the weak link in the chain. With Moxa's NPort series you are protected, read here how.

Do you lock the door when you go out?

Locking our homes before we leave is second nature to us. We do it automatically, without thinking about it, even though there are many good reasons to do so. Aside from protecting our homes from rain and wind, we mainly want to prevent unauthorised persons from entering our house. Nobody wants to come home to find it damaged or rummaged through, or valuable items missing.

The same sensible precautions also apply to the companies we work for. Owners will do anything to protect against damage or theft. But today, inventory theft isn't the only concern for business owners: data theft has become a major headache.

Unfortunately, cybersecurity protection is often not prioritised as highly as physical security measures. However, it's important to focus on cyber security if you don't want to pay the price of downtime caused by malicious attacks.

Large or small installation, everyone is a target for attack.

Many people mistakenly believe that cyberattacks only happen in larger installations, but this is completely wrong. Hackers try every option, for them every attack is an opportunity to make money. The methods they use are changing all the time, so it's important to stay vigilant and use high-quality products, not only in terms of hardware but also in terms of software.

Prevention is best.

As we protect our homes and families, a few precautions in your installation can make a huge difference. The following cyber precautions are important to establish a secure connection in your installation.

  1. Make sure the device is protected with a complex password and that only authorised users can access the system. You'd be surprised how many devices still use default passwords, even though you can easily find them with a few clicks on the Internet. A good tip is to change the password on a regular basis.
  2. Reduce surface areas for attack. A service or port in a device is like an open door or window in your house. Having an unused service or port enabled is like leaving a door open - a sign of welcome to any hacker. To reduce unexpected attacks, make sure all your unused services or ports are disabled.
  3. As you only hand out keys to selected people you trust at home, it's also a good idea to make a list of which devices are allowed access and what type of communication. Enter the few IP addresses in the list that are allowed access, blocking all unauthorised IP addresses.
  4. Keep an eye on your roof at all times, if there's a hole, get it patched right away. The same goes for your industrial installation, keep your safety tools updated. Security isn't something you do once, it's something you have to do continuously. Every day, new viruses emerge or new vulnerabilities are discovered. That's why it's important to update to the latest patches to prevent new cyber attacks.

Moxa offers.

Moxa's serial-to-Ethernet products support various security features that fulfil cyber security requirements. If you are interested in finding a secure solution to transfer your serial data over Ethernet, please request our ”S2E device installation checklist” at the bottom of this page.
