IEC 62443 as reference standard under NIS2
Although the NIS2 Directive does not prescribe a specific standard, IEC 62443 is often cited as the most relevant and recommended technical reference framework for cybersecurity in industrial networks and OT systems.
The IEC 62443 series covers both technical and organizational security measures and is suitable for meeting NIS2 requirements, including:
IEC 62443 requires systematic risk assessment and defines control objectives for access, network segmentation and incident management.
The standard sets requirements for documentation, secure integration of third-party systems and lifecycle management - key elements of NIS2.
IEC 62443-4-2 and -2-1 include requirements for cyber incident detection, response and recovery, which is in line with NIS2’s focus on resilience.
IEC 62443-certified Ethernet switches meet strict requirements for both cybersecurity and operational robustness and are the cornerstone of modern industrial networks. Many models, such as Moxa's Moxa's EDS series are certified to Security Level 2 and offer features such as access control (802.1X, TACACS+, RADIUS, SNMPv3), data encryption (HTTPS, SSH), and continuous network monitoring via SNMP and RMON.
This advanced security makes them suitable for critical environments in utilities, process industries and transportation, where protection against cyberattacks is a prerequisite.
In addition, these switches support complex redundancy protocols such as STP, RSTP, MSTP as well as high-performance ring-based systems such as Turbo Ring/Chain and Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) that guarantee automatic network recovery typically under <20-50 ms.
Redundancy ensures continuous data flow and minimal downtime - which is crucial in operational monitoring of critical automation equipment. Typically, these solutions are used in utility networks (power, water, etc.), infrastructure installations and industrial control systems.
Finally, the switches integrate several infrastructural features that increase flexibility and reliability. Many models come with PoE ports, fiber uplinks and support for protocols such as Ethernet/IP, PROFINET and Modbus TCP, supporting data storage, video surveillance and actuator operation.
